NASA air pollution sampling flights may startle Marylanders

A NASA plane will fly as low as 1,000 feet over Central Maryland starting next week as part of an air pollution study.

The four-engine, propeller-driven Orion P3 will fly a circuit from Beltsville and Annapolis to Cecil County and back, sometimes spiraling as low as 1,000 feet over I-95, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the Baltimore Beltway.

Test flights will begin as soon as Monday, and the science flights will start July 1. Aircraft will fly on 12 to 14 days in all through July, as weather permits. They’ll start as early as 6 a.m., and continue as late as 8 p.m. Cloudy days may keep them grounded.
