Cold Front Threatens O’s Opener; Freeze Likely Tonight

681140_1Summary: A cold front will cross the state this afternoon and evening. Cold high pressure builds in behind it and persists into Wednesday. Another system will affect our area Thursday.

With Orioles Opening Day upon us, all eyes will be on an area of low pressure and cold front to our northwest.

Unfortunately, it looks as though the front will push into our area this afternoon, spreading showers and possibly a thunderstorm into the state. Showers will persist into the evening hours before pushing off to the southeast tonight.

Here is a simulated radar showing the possible timing of the rain from 12pm to 10pm:

Before the system moves in, it will be mild and breezy with temperatures reaching the 60s to close to 70 in spots while southwest winds gust to near 30 mph at times.

Cold high pressure will push in tonight, producing gusty winds and dropping temperatures below freezing in most places. For this reason, a Freeze Warning has been issued for all of central Maryland and the upper Eastern Shore. A Frost Advisory is in effect for Southern Maryland and the lower Eastern Shore.

Tomorrow will be sunny but cold and windy. Highs will range from the 30s in the mountains to 40s elsewhere. Winds will continue to gust to near 30 mph.

Wednesday will be the transition day, as winds shift around to the south ahead of the next system that will push a cold front through on Thursday.

High pressure builds back in for the weekend.
