Two Systems will bring Rain Tomorrow into Thursday

Summary: Two separate areas of low pressure will affect our area beginning early tomorrow morning. The first low will move through tomorrow while a second, stronger system moves in Wednesday morning.

Good Morning! Today will be quiet and mostly sunny, with highs generally in the upper 40s to low 50s.

An area of low pressure will spread precipitation into the state late tonight or early tomorrow morning. In the colder spots north and west of I-95, it may begin as a brief period of mixed precipitation before changing to rain. The rain will continue into the afternoon hours, mainly east of the mountains. The rain will taper off during the evening hours.

While that system pulls away, a second stronger system will be taking shape to our southwest. This system will spread rainfall back into the area during the morning hours on Wednesday. In far western Maryland, trapped cold air could remain in place, leading to a freezing rain scenario. This would only affect mainly Garrett and Allegany counties.

The rain could become heavy at times as the low passes well to our west. Additionally, strong southerly flow ahead of the associated cold front will support some instability. As a result, a few thunderstorms could also form Wednesday afternoon and evening as the cold front pushes eastward.

The system will swing its cold front through overnight Wednesday, ending the rain and any thunderstorms by Thursday morning.

As the storm pulls away, strong northwest flow will develop, bringing upslope snow showers to the mountains and a chance of showers elsewhere.

Here is the 06z NAM simulated reflectivity showing the timing of the two systems from 4am Tuesday through 10am Thursday:

High pressure builds in on Friday and persists into the weekend, leading to mostly sunny skies for that stretch.
