Sunny but cold today; Wintry mix likely Sunday night and Monday

Cold Canadian high pressure continues to push into the area today, spreading very cold air into the eastern United States. Highs will only push into the mid to upper 20s under sunny skies.

A weak disturbance will bring a slight chance of a shower tomorrow afternoon. Highs will be around 40.

Clouds will increase Saturday night and Sunday morning as an area of low pressure moves towards the area from the west. Light rain will likely develop by the afternoon. Highs will be in the low 40s.

The forecast gets very tricky as we move into Sunday night and Monday. The low is expected to move from west to east, just to our south. With cold air trapped east of the mountains, Sunday’s rain will likely transition to frozen precipitation.

At this time, it appears that snow is likely across northern Maryland and points north, while central Maryland sees a mix of sleet and freezing rain, while rain perhaps mixed with sleet is likely across southern Maryland.

As we move into Monday, the snow line will likely push southward, changing everyone back to snow, with perhaps a few inches of accumulation before winding down Monday night.

No matter what type of precipitation falls, this is shaping up to be a high impact event, especially for the Monday morning commute. Stay tuned for updates to the forecast as we move closer to the event.

Behind the system, another shot of cold Canadian air will move in on Tuesday. Expect a cold and quiet stretch through Thursday, before another system possibly affects the area on Friday.
